It is a privilege to support and be affiliated with numerous local and worldwide organizations that share our beliefs and philosophy.
Novena was born on the need for safe and effective skin care products for all women of child bearing years. As a Licensed skin care provider for over 18 years I was very concerned knowing the fact that everything applied to the skin penetrates into the bloodstream. I was not satisfied with the options available to IVF patients and pregnant or nursing women. The industry was filled with so many brands full of questionable harmful ingredients that I decided to be the visionary. I began working with organic chemists in 2003 with the official release of Novena Maternal Skin Care launching in the spring of 2008. Five years of research and development went into Novena and we continue our quest to bring you the purest, cleanest most effective products available in the market.

List of Chemical Toxic Ingredients to avoid during pregnancy and lactating (breastfeeding) and why. See Below
Phthalates Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and or di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP or BzBP)
• They are found in products such as hair sprays, perfumes, nail polishes. They are used to soften plastic, skin moisturizers and agents of skin penetration in cosmetics.
Research has indicated:
• They are known to cause serious effects on reproduction and development in laboratory animals.
• They have been linked to premature breast development in girls and have been shown to interfere with the development of male organs reproductive organs in the fetus.
• They disrupt hormones.
Known as a group of artificial preservatives that are also known as benzoates – butyl / methyl / ethyl / propyl / isobutyl paraben
Evidence has shown that:
• mimic estrogen in the body
• penetrate through the skin and appear in the blood.
• have been found in breast tumors.
• BHT / Butyl hydroxytoluene, also E321
It is used as synthetic antioxidant.
• Causes irritation
• have been related to possible effects on behavior and reproductive problems.
• Propylene Glycol
May cause dermatitis and has been linked to depression of the central nervous system.
•Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
It is an irritant to the respiratory tract, skin and eyes. Could damage the liver, lungs and immune system and have shown some evidence suggesting reproductive effects.
•DEA / TEA
Diethanolamine and triethanolamine compound
DEA / TEA could lead to the formation of carcinogens in products containing nitrite preservatives. Chemical reactions between nitrite and DEA TEA / are produced during the manufacturing process and appear in the product while being stored in their containers forming carcinogenic nitrosamines.
• Salicylic acid (BHA or beta hydroxy acid)
This ingredient can be found in products used to treat acne, exfoliating and anti-aging products. The issue with this particular ingredient is the complications that arise during pregnancy, especially in women who have taken aspirin, since salicylic acid is a part of the family of aspirin therefore best avoided. It is simply not known whether topical application can cause problems.
• Retinol – Retin A
This ingredient is a form of Vitamin A is also used to treat acne and used for exfoliation. High doses of vitamin A have been shown to be harmful to the baby.
• Parabens (all types)
This ingredient is a very common preservative used in many skincare products. It is an ingredient that we all must avoid because studies are starting to show a link between parabens and adverse effects on the reproductive system of male babies. It is recommended to investigate more on this ingredient, so why risk it if you are pregnant.
It could be listed as PDB (dibutyl phthalate) is found in products such as nail polish. More often in the most of the products are no longer mentioned. Phthalates can be found in products for skin care with “aroma” that appears on the label. It can be found in any number of skin care products or cosmetics, including nail polish, deodorants, hair sprays or perfumes. It is an ingredient to avoid during pregnancy.
According to the book “Not Just a Pretty Face” – The ugly side of the beauty industry, “a 2005 study by Shanna Swan, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Rochester, has shown a “significant relationship” to the presence of larger amounts of phthalates present in the body of a pregnant woman and changes that it causes in the genitals of baby boys.
More studies are needed, but why risk it when there are effective products that do not contain Phthalates. Search among companies that offer phthalate free products, avoid products and nail enamels with “fragrance” listed on the label. Always look for Phthalate Free.
• shave cream
The possibility exists that the chemicals in these products can be absorbed through the skin, therefore, should also be avoided during pregnancy. In addition, many of the most popular brands may also contain “fragrance” phthalates. So it is safer to simply avoid using them. I know this might not be what some women want to hear, especially for women who tend to find more hair than usual during their pregnancy, but in these cases it is better to resort to shaving and waxing.
• Essential Oils
I dare not mention essential oils to the list of ingredients to avoid during pregnancy because there are some essential oils that are particularly useful for skin care in pregnancy. Eva’s Garden has a great article on the benefits of using essential oils, which can use and which to avoid.
• Benzoyl peroxide
According Safe Fetus (a database that provides information on the safety of medications taken during pregnancy and lactation) benzoyl peroxide is found in many products used to treat acne, was classified Category C, this mean: “Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus (teratogenic or embryo toxic) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. “
This oral treatment for acne should not be used at all during pregnancy. There is great concern about putting the fetus at risk for serious birth defects and the possibility of fetal loss. Safefetus.com reports that this ingredient has been classified under the category X, which means you absolutely; do not use this ingredient during pregnancy or lactation.
This topical cream used to treat acne is believed to put the fetus at risk for birth defects and possible poisoning to the fetus, but more studies are needed. This ingredient has been classified in Safe Fetus as a category C and is to be used with care.
Who would have thought that lead could be in any of the products we use?, But a study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (Search Lead in lipstick) found lead in some popular brands of lipstick’s.
The amounts found are enough to worry about if you are pregnant. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says that “pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure because lead easily crosses the placenta and can enter the fetal brain, and interfere with fetal development.”
It is best to avoid using commercial lipstick during pregnancy, there are many natural lipsticks that will provide peace of mind and will make you look beautiful.
This is not an ingredient that is listed in any of the skin care products because it is a byproduct of other synthetic oil based ingredients. It has been found to cause cancer and its effects on the developing fetus are unknown. It is present in many cleaning products, hair products, moisturizers, among other personal care products. Unfortunately, it has also been found in products claiming to be natural or organic.
